CREATINE AND SEMAGLUTIDE: WHY MUSCLE MATTERS DURING WEIGHT LOSS

Creatine and semaglutide are increasingly mentioned in the same conversation, and the reason is not the number on the scale. It is what that number is made of. When weight comes off, some of it is fat, and some of it is lean tissue, including the muscle you use to climb stairs, carry shopping and stand up from a chair.

Semaglutide is a prescription therapy that acts on the GLP-1 receptor to help regulate blood sugar and support weight loss. It is a medical decision between you and your doctor, and nothing in this article is a reason to start, stop or change it. What we can do is explain the physiology behind a question we hear more and more: how do you look after muscle while the weight changes?

When the scale drops, what is leaving?

Body weight is a blunt instrument. It cannot tell fat from muscle. Two people can lose the same number of kilos and end up with very different strength, mobility and energy afterwards.

Muscle matters because it is where much of your everyday movement is powered. It is also the tissue that responds to training. A weight-loss plan that only watches the scale can miss it entirely.

An illustrative profile

Imagine a 52-year-old woman weighing 102 kg who starts semaglutide therapy. After 12 weeks, she has lost 10.5 kg,  including approximately 3.2 kg of lean tissue.

What if the next 12 weeks included resistance training, adequate protein intake and creatine supplementation?

In this illustrative scenario, lean-mass loss could be reduced to around 0.5 kg, while weight loss continues.

The goal isn’t just to lose weight. It’s to help preserve muscle along the way. Creatine may play a supporting role as part of a comprehensive strategy.

Where creatine fits

Every muscle contraction is paid for in ATP, and your muscles hold only a small store of it. Phosphocreatine is the fast reserve that helps regenerate ATP during short, intense efforts, such as the last reps of a set. If you want the full mechanism, we explain it in the creatine kinase and phosphocreatine system and in our guide to muscle energy.

The authorised EFSA claim is simple: “Creatine is proven to increase physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise, at a daily intake of 3g.”

That is the connection. Resistance training is made of successive bursts of short, high-intensity effort. Creatine supports that kind of effort, and consistent, good-quality training is what gives muscle a reason to stay.

Where Clonapure® comes in

Clonapure®  is a trimolecular complex of creatine monohydrate, phosphocreatine and calcium phosphate. The serving is 3 g a day, with no loading phase, mixed in water.

We have our own research. In a pilot randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 16 elite volleyball players took Clonapure® for 28 days. In cell studies, it raised ATP in muscle and neuronal cells. Those are different populations from the one in this article, and the volleyball study is small. We have not studied Clonapure® in people using GLP-1 therapies, and we do not claim it does anything for weight or body composition. If you want to know how to weigh evidence like this, read how to read a supplement study.

What creatine does not do

  • It does not cause weight loss.
  • It does not replace training or protein.
  • It is not a treatment for any condition.
  • It is not a substitute for your clinician’s advice.

The Clonapure standard

If creatine is going to be part of your plan, its quality matters. Clonapure® is made in our own EU-GMP plant in Arganda del Rey, Madrid. It is anti-doping tested by Eurofins, WADA Free, vegan, kosher, halal, gluten-free and lactose-free. We explain what to look for in what makes creatine pure.

How to check it yourself

Before you change anything in your routine, run through this short list:

  1. Ask your doctor. Especially if you take any medication or have a medical condition.
  2. Make training the centre. Two to three resistance sessions a week, progressed over time.
  3. Check your protein. Ask a professional what is right for you.
  4. Measure more than the scale. Strength, how you move, how you feel on stairs.
  5. Choose a supplement you can verify. Look for batch testing and clear labelling.

Weight loss is a number. Muscle is what lets you live well afterwards. From cellular energy to life in action.
